Screen Actors Guild Awards are sometimes dismissed as just another stop on the long road to the Oscars—but Sunday night’s ceremony was anything but business as usual. Outrage against President Trump's new immigration ban took center stage at the Screen Actors Guild Awards — even though the ceremony was full of shocking upsets and surprise winners.

The Screen Actors Guild Awards are perhaps the most important indicator of which filmmakers and actors will take home the coveted Oscars, which makes this year's show all the more important. Emma Stone was the lone representative for award season , while Hidden Figures and Fences picked up some momentum with their wins. TV shows and actors also had a big night with Stranger Things getting its due alongside Orange Is the New Black, which took home the SAG Awards in the major TV categories.
